5 Steps to Overcome Limiting Beliefs

{If you haven't read Part 1, you can find it here: What are Limiting Beliefs and Where Do they Come From? }

Limiting beliefs become the story we tell ourselves about our abilities, our strength, and our endurance or the lack of these things. Your past is behind you, you can’t really rewrite the past chapters of your life. What happened is what happened, now let's move on.

You CAN reframe that story in your mind and you can create NEW beliefs that rewire your brain for success and not failure. Peace and not fear. Joy and not sadness.

Romans 8:6: The mind governed by the flesh is death, but the mind governed by the Spirit is life and peace.

How? Start with your foundation.

John 14:26 But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.

Your foundation is built on all the current limiting and faith-filled beliefs you have.

Phil 4:7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. NIV

I want you to write down the limiting beliefs that have kept you stuck. This is going to be some DEEP WORK. It could be painful to think about where your ideas about yourself came from.

For each limiting belief I want you to write down 5 things for each one:

1. The limiting belief:___________________

2. The fear behind that belief: _________________

3. The consequences of this belief: ______________________

4. The Bible says (use Google or Bible gateway): _____________________

5. Write out prayer or affirmation______________

Example:
Limiting Belief: “I am afraid I won’t be strong enough to say no to temptation.”
Fear behind it: I will fail and be a failure.
Consequences of that: I will be unhappy, depressed and never lose weight and get healthy
Verse: The joy of the Lord is my strength.- You find one that speaks to YOU.

Affirmation: “I trust the work God is doing in my heart and He will give me the strength I need.”

The affirmation is very important because it will be the NEW belief we create and solidify in our minds. This is where the rubber meets the road ladies….only YOU can do this work of rebuilding your foundation.

Here’s the most important part of this exercise: for this to be effective, you have to be authentic, and you have to believe your affirmation. You can’t fudge on this.

You can choose to walk by faith when it comes to the verse, but you have to be honest with yourself about what you can believe TODAY with the affirmation.

Your brain is SMART and it's not fooled if you lie to it.

So, think about that when choosing your affirmation.

What can you believe- right now?
Whatever you believe about yourself, your BODY believes too, and will respond accordingly.

Example: if you say, "I CAN SAY NO to ALL temptation, God gives me strength, I’ll never fail again!"

Forget it. It's unrealistic and we know that's not true.

What do you actually believe?

You can say…”Lord help my unbelief.”
